Sentinels of New Orleans Series by Suzanne Johnson Review

Elysian Fields

Sentinels of New Orleans Series

Book Three
Suzanne Johnson

Book Description:

The mer feud has been settled, but life in South Louisiana still has more twists and turns than the muddy Mississippi. New Orleanians are under attack from a copycat killer mimicking the crimes of a 1918 serial murderer known as the Axeman of New Orleans.

Thanks to a tip from the undead pirate Jean Lafitte, DJ Jaco knows the attacks aren't random--an unknown necromancer has resurrected the original Axeman of New Orleans, and his ultimate target is a certain blonde wizard.

Namely, DJ. Fighting off an undead serial killer as troubles pile up around her isn't easy. Jake Warin's loup-garou nature is spiraling downward, enigmatic neighbor Quince Randolph is acting weirder than ever, the Elders are insisting on lessons in elven magic from the world's most annoying wizard, and former partner Alex
Warin just turned up on DJ's to-do list. Not to mention big maneuvers are afoot in the halls of preternatural power.

Suddenly, moving to the Beyond as Jean Lafitte's pirate wench? It could be DJ's best option.

Sentinels of New Orleans
Book Two

Suzanne Johnson

Book Description:

Hurricane Katrina is long gone, but the preternatural storm rages on in New Orleans. New species from the Beyond moved into Louisiana after the hurricane destroyed the borders between worlds, and it falls to wizard sentinel Drusilla Jaco and her partner, Alex Warin, to keep the preternaturals peaceful and the humans unaware. But a war is brewing between two clans of Cajun merpeople in Plaquemines Parish, and down in the swamp, DJ learns, there’s more stirring than angry mermen and the threat of a were-gator.

Wizards are dying, and something—or someone—from the Beyond is poisoning the waters of the mighty Mississippi, threatening the humans who live and work along the river. DJ and Alex must figure out what unearthly source is contaminating the water and who—or what—is killing the wizards. Is it a malcontented merman, the naughty nymph, or some other critter altogether? After all, DJ’s undead suitor, the pirate Jean Lafitte, knows his way around a body or two.

It’s anything but smooth sailing on the bayou as the Sentinels of New Orleans series continues.

Sentinels of New Orleans
Book One
Suzanne Johnson

Book Description:

As the junior wizard sentinel for New Orleans, Drusilla Jaco's job involves a lot more potion-mixing and pixie-retrieval than sniffing out supernatural bad guys like rogue vampires and lethal were-creatures. DJ's boss and mentor, Gerald St. Simon, is the wizard tasked with protecting the city from anyone or anything that might slip over from the preternatural beyond.

Then Hurricane Katrina hammers New Orleans' fragile levees, unleashing more than just dangerous flood waters. While winds howled and Lake Pontchartrain surged, the borders between the modern city and the Otherworld crumbled. Now the undead and the restless are roaming the Big Easy, and a serial killer with ties to voodoo is murdering soldiers sent to help the city recover.

To make it worse, Gerald St. Simon has gone missing, the wizards' Elders have assigned a grenade-toting assassin as DJ's new partner, and undead pirate Jean Lafitte wants to make her walk his plank. The search for Gerry and the killer turns personal when DJ learns the hard way that loyalty requires sacrifice, allies come from the unlikeliest places, and duty mixed with love creates one bitter roux.

About the Author:
On Aug. 28, 2005, Suzanne Johnson loaded two dogs, a cat, a friend, and her mom into a car and fled New Orleans in the hours before Hurricane Katrina made landfall.

Four years later, she began weaving her experiences and love for her city into the Sentinels of New Orleans urban fantasy series, beginning with Royal Street (2012), continuing with River Road (2012), and now with Elysian Fields (August 2013).

She grew up in rural Alabama, halfway between the Bear Bryant Museum and Elvis’ birthplace, and lived in New Orleans for fifteen years—which means she has a highly refined sense of the absurd and an ingrained love of SEC football and fried gator on a stick.

As Susannah Sandlin, she writes the best-selling Penton Vampire Legacy paranormal romance series and the recent standalone, Storm Force.

REVIEWS:

I previously reviewed book 1 & 2 (and have been anxiously waiting for the chance to do book 3)

Royal Street
5 / 5
I felt like I was there. Not just in the chaos that Hurricane Katrina created, but in the life of Drusilla Jaco. The characters literally come alive. A wonderfully written entertaining story.

River Road
5/5
I love that Suzanne is able to make me laugh with the witty banter of the characters yet have me holding my breath to see what happens next. This is a series that could (should) continue for several more installments. A brilliant mix of paranormal / urban fantasy characters.

Elysian Fields
5/5
I wasn't at all surprised that I loved this addition to the Sentinels of New Orleans. I didn't think it was possible to top the second book, but Ms. Johnson managed that and more. There are so many heart stopping moments in this book, I hoped for DJ to catch a break. The characters will stay with you for a long time, they're brilliant.  This series needs to go on for several more installments.
Fabulous writing!

Demon of Envy by Jennifer Lynne

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Jennifer will be awarding a $25 Amazon Gift Card, plus a signed print copy of GODS OF LOVE (1-3) and a set of the GODS OF LOVE cover postcards to a randomly drawn winner via the rafflecopter at the end of this post, during the tour (International Giveaway).

Phthonos, god of envy and jealousy, has been given a second chance at life and love in the mortal realm. He is desperate to make up for the mistakes of his past. But is Thon more demon than god? And if the demon Envy wins out, how will this lonely god ever find room in his heart for love?

Olivia is an ordinary woman living an ordered life, but at thirty-two true romance appears to have eluded her. Everywhere she looks people are in relationships or falling in love, but her career as an administrator and her charity work are enough to keep the demon of envy at bay.

Or so she thinks…until the moment he turns up on her doorstep with a demand that rips her life and her heart wide open and leaves her at risk of eternal torment.

DEMON OF ENVY is the fifth novella in the GODS OF LOVE series, but each story is designed as a stand-alone with the Greek gods of desire as a common theme. The series can be read in any order.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

"You want me to walk through the fires of Hell to save you? Phthonos, you ask too much."

"Not to save me, Olivia. To save yourself." The dark tone of his correction shivered down her spine in a sensation that was equal parts fear and desire. She knew this was a dream; had relived the sleep-induced fiction every night this week. She needed to wake up before the bit where he started to burn, where she reached toward him and…oh God, the flames were consuming him already. It was too fast, too powerful…his beautiful face twisted in pain, the clear green eyes flashing desperation as he stretched out a clutching hand…she leaned in, connected with his fingers, and the greedy flames engulfed her too…

For the sixth time that week Liv sat bolt upright in bed, the scream still lodged in her throat and the bedcovers in a twisted mess around her legs. Sweat coated her body. Not the heady exotic scent of post-coital perspiration, either. No. This was the sharp acrid scent of sheer terror, of illness. Of something wrong at her core.

She reached for the brown hair tie on her wrist and snapped it. Once. Twice. A third time. Count to three, then snap again, over and over, the rhythm so familiar by now she didn't need to think. Gradually her heart stopped its uncomfortable thumping and her breathing began to even out. The anxiety attack was receding.

One last snap of the wrist band, the one for luck that she always had to finish with, and she was back in control once again. A swift kick with her left foot removed the sheet and she climbed wearily out of bed before turning back to straighten the tangled covers. Phthonos. Whoever the heck you are, whichever little piece of my imagination that you sprang from, you need to let me get some sleep, hon.

EXCERPT

He strode to me and crouched at my hip. His shirt was already off and the nearness of his well-built chest made it a challenge to stop myself from glancing at it. To my astonishment, he seemed not to notice my internal plight, not even the tremble that shook me when he tenderly took my chin and turned it toward him.

"You're healing nicely," he observed, concentrating on my forehead.

"Mm-hmm." It was all I could muster.

This was the closest we had ever been. His lips were no more than a few inches from me and drew my attention.

"I don't think you'll even scar."

When I didn't answer, I felt a shift in his presence and my eyes darted up to find him staring back with his striking blue-green eyes.

We froze in place.

Only our chests rose and fell, and they did it more rapidly the longer we stared at each other.

As his eyes lowered to my lips, his fingers tightened gently around my chin.

The flare of his nostrils and the intensity of his stare mesmerized me, made me want him closer. And it told me that he was struggling too and was in profound debate over what we were doing. No ward should be this close to their guardian, even if the ward didn't recognize them as one. It was taboo, unheard of, an abject insult to the role the guardian had been given. Yet, here he was, looking at me, at my lips, tensing at the sight of them.

And he wasn't alone in the struggle. For the first time, I forgot my urge to throw him off balance, my need to establish my independence. I was the one quickly losing my poise and forgetting who was dominant. The charm I fought so hard to deny, the very one that drew all others to him, took hold of me. And I gave into it out of my own free will.

The Pendulum Files by P.M. Terrell

I’ve done the unthinkable.

Over the past two months, I have been cleaning out my office and—gasp!—getting rid of books.

My office is the size of a two-car garage and was built with windows facing all four sides, but I’ve been barely able to see out of them because of the bookcases that stretch from wall to wall and floor to ceiling. I ran out of shelf space long ago so books were placed horizontally along the tops of others or stacked on the floor or shoved into any available nook or cranny.

I came to the realization that many of the reference books I’d accumulated were no longer relevant so I began going through my office one shelf at a time. I am about a third of the way through, and the process has been intimidating, daunting and invigorating.

The process has reminded me of the stages I’ve gone through as an author. Dating back forty years are books that instructed me, step-by-step, how to write well. I had books on character development, plot ideas, rules for writing the sub-genres for thrillers (yes, there are rules), how to structure sentences, how to write dialog, how to tighten a story, and how to self-edit.

Then there were books that chronicled my journey as I attempted to find a publisher and agent: books on writing the perfect query letters, books detailing the editors at various publishing houses and what they were searching for, lists of literary agents, and how to sell books to the film industry.

I had shelves filled with books on the publishing industry as I attempted to understand how it worked and how to further my career. I had a shelf filled with books on how to break the $100,000 a year ceiling, how to broaden my platform through magazine articles and how to get noticed by larger publishers.

Then I encountered the stage after my first suspense was published: the books on marketing and promotion. They ran the gamut from how to get my book on amazon’s bestseller lists to doing physical book tours, grabbing media attention, growing a fan base, and much, much more.

I filled two vans with the books I’ve donated thus far. I decided to keep those books that would be helpful to me throughout a long writing career and donate the others to thrift shops so other aspiring writers could learn as I did: one stage at a time.

For those books that I turn to time and time again, I looked for them in electronic form. I think publishers are missing a huge opportunity to greatly increase their revenues. They have thousands upon thousands of books that have gone out of print; yet if they re-released them now in electronic form, many of them would surely find a rapt audience. Yet I find myself keeping yellowed books with broken bindings because I know I will use them again and again, and they are sadly now out of print.

My iPad has become the best reading buddy I could ever have had. I can store more than 50,000 books on that single device. Lately I upgraded to a new iPad and watched as it went out to some mysterious nether region, grabbed my books off a cybershelf and reloaded them onto my new device.

Someday, if I’m lucky, I might be sitting in an office with shelves filled with curios, my windows unobstructed and the sunlight streaming in, and thousands of books sitting beside me in a space smaller than a notebook.

Excerpt

She wasn’t quite sure what roused her from sleep. But as Vicki slowly opened her eyes, she became aware of her nude body lying on one side with Dylan’s larger, muscular form curled up behind her. One arm was stretched over her protectively and her derriere rested against his lap, their legs intertwined.
Normally some moonlight found its way inside, but the room was so murky that she wondered if there was any moon at all this night. She narrowed her eyes in an effort to adjust to the darkness as Dylan’s measured, soft breathing remained against her ear.
She nearly gasped as her eyes fell upon a figure just a few feet from the bed. She frowned as it swayed in front of her; it was not flesh and blood—that much was obvious. It was almost opaque and as she continued to stare, it grew more luminous until a tiny woman stood in front of her with long, flowing white hair billowing about her as if blown by the wind.
She wore a thin nightgown that reached from the base of her neck all the way to her feet, and as Vicki continued to stare, she smiled.
“Mam,” Vicki breathed as she recognized Dylan’s grandmother.
Dylan murmured something incomprehensible and held her more tightly against him.
“Be careful what you do, child,” Mam said in a clear voice. “There are eyes on you.”
Vicki gasped and grabbed at the bed covering. “You shouldn’t be watching us!” she exclaimed.
Dylan awakened and leaned over her to look at her face. “What is it, Darlin’?”
Vicki could feel the heat in her cheeks. She half-turned to Dylan to see him watching her with sleepy eyes. “I—” She turned back to where his grandmother had stood, but she was gone.
“Another bad dream, mayhap?” he asked before settling back. “There’s nothin’ at’al to be frightened of, Darlin’. I’ll take good care o’ you.”
She tried to relax against his body once more. She kept her eyes open and her ears on alert but she was met only with silence and a darkness that reminded her that she’d had precious little sleep. Still, she pulled the bedcovers over them, covering their naked bodies.
The grandfather clock downstairs ticked off the seconds, the sound reminding her of just how silent the rest of the house really was. She finally felt herself snuggling into that warm cocoon of sleep.
She could feel Dylan’s breath against the back of her neck; it was the steady breathing of a man deeply asleep. Then she became aware of something else, something against her nose as if someone was breathing on her face.
Her eyes flew open to find Mam leaning down in front of her, her face just inches from hers.
“It isn’t me you need to be concernin’ y’self with, child,” she said. “Other eyes are watchin’.”

Mind Games by Christine Amsden

Beware your heart and soul…

Evan broke Cassie’s heart two months ago, and she still doesn’t know why. She throws herself into family, friends and her new job at the sheriff’s department, but nothing helps. The only thing that finally allows her heal and move on is the love of a new man, mind mage Matthew Blair. Cassie finds him…irresistible.

Matthew may also be the only one who can help keep the non-magical residents of Eagle Rock from going crazy over the murder of a beloved pastor’s wife. It looks like a sorcerer is to blame, but while Cassie tries to figure out who, others take matters into their own hands. With tensions running so hot, a single spark might set Eagle Rock ablaze.

Excerpt:

Rick was still on some tirade about the heat, possibly trying to blame an August heatwave on sorcery, or perhaps the wrath of God, when I got the oddest sense of foreboding. It was a tingle, one of those things that is easily dismissed in the moment but, in retrospect, makes you think, I had a feeling…

Upon entering the diner my impression of danger strengthened, though it took me a minute to pinpoint the source of the threat. I noticed two things at once: First, Mrs. Meyer’s oddly shifty gaze as she worked the cash register, and second, the nervous expression of the stooped, middle-aged man standing opposite her.

The tinkle of bells startled the man in front of the register more than it should have. He turned slightly, took a good look at Rick and me in our deputy’s uniforms, and let out a cry of alarm. The next thing I knew he held a pistol in his shaking hands. “Don’t move!”

I froze. In that microcosm of time between instants, I gathered that Rick and I had interrupted a robbery and the man probably thought someone had called the cops. There was a sense of desperation about the man that made him seem wild and unpredictable – a dangerous combination, especially for a man holding a deadly weapon.

When time resumed, everyone in the diner began to panic. More than a few people screamed. Dishes fell and broke. Everyone scrambled for cover, most sheltering under tables.

Rescued by the Buccaneer by Normandie Alleman

Rescued by the Buccaneer (Pirates of the Jolie Rouge Trilogy, #1)
By Normandie Alleman
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
When Frederica Beauchamp boards a ship for the Americas, she dreams of a life filled with adventure, but she gets more than she bargained for when her passenger ship is attacked by pirates. The heartless men kidnap her and force her to serve their captain—a fate that might be worse than death, since though he does not have his way with her, the captain delights in baring her, shaming her, and thrashing her bare bottom as punishment for every imagined disobedience.
After the pirates bring aboard an injured man found floating in the sea, Frederica tends to his wounds and learns that he is Gaston Galette, a survivor of a shipwrecked vessel. Gaston seeks her help to overthrow the vile captain, but when their plan goes awry he is forced to use all of his wiles to save them. As the naïve girl and the seasoned sailor navigate one perilous situation after another, he informs Frederica that the only way they can survive is if he is in command, and that if she thinks things can be otherwise, she will be taken over his knee for a bare bottom spanking.
As he watches the proud, willful Frederica bow to his authority, however, Gaston worries that her growing hold on his heart will be his downfall. He knows he cannot take a woman with him when he returns to his ship and crew, but when Frederica accepts his lustful dominance completely, submitting to him with grace and beauty no other woman could match, Gaston realizes that he may never be able to let her go.
Publisher’s Note: Rescued by the Buccaneer is the first book of the Pirates of the Jolie Rouge trilogy. It is an adventure and erotic romance novel that includes spankings, sexual scenes including elements of BDSM and humiliation, and more.
Character Interview with Frederica Beauchamp from Rescued by the Buccaneer
Frederica, your trip started off as a trip to the American colonies. What were you planning to do when you reached America?
My friend Cassandra and I intended on finding work as governesses, though I was also interested in finding an explorer who might allow me to come along on an expedition. I was looking for adventure in the new world.
When did you first realize your dreams of coming to America weren’t going to happen?
The moment I laid eyes on that horrible Captain Humphrey. He and his men frightened me so badly and I had this terrible sense of foreboding, like I was going to die or something. I didn’t realize until much later that part of me did die that day.
What was your first impression of Gaston?
(Giggles) He looked rather pitiful, like a drowned rat. I don’t think I realized how handsome he was until later when I was tending his wounds. At first he was soaking wet and weak from being at sea for days, certainly not the strong, self-assured, dominant pirate I later came to know.
What does Gaston do that drives you crazy?
He won’t acknowledge that his eye patch impedes his depth perception. Occasionally he will bump into something because of it, but he’ll never admit he has a problem. I know that’s what it is, but he’s terrified the crew will see it as a weakness so he doesn’t want anyone to know. (She bites her lip nervously.) You won’t tell anyone will you?
No, of course not. Now I have some questions about the upcoming book. What can we expect to see in book two of the Pirate of the Jolie Rouge Trilogy?
(whispers) There will be a lot more sex in Bound by the Buccaneer. Gaston and I have settled into a delightfully kinky relationship and I will grow up a lot, which will drive Gaston a bit nuts. You will also meet some new characters and learn more about Hatch in the second book.
What about Captain Humphrey, will we see him?
Frederica nods, biting back a smile.
Anything else you can tell us about that?
Nope. You’ll just have to read the book.
Thanks for being with us today. Best wishes to you and Gaston!
Thank you.
Excerpt One:
On this particular day, her daydreaming was cut short when, in the distance, a white square appeared, dipping in and out of view. On wobbly legs, she ran to find an officer. It was rare to see other vessels in the open sea, and when it occurred, the crew became nervous because they feared the other ship would be carrying pirates. And since they were sailing for the southern colonies, their route took them awfully close to the Caribbean, which was known to have pirate-infested waters.
The first mate was busy having a conversation with a midshipman, and Frederica did her best to wait patiently for it to end. But the longer the first mate ignored her, the closer the approaching ship came. Finally, she tugged at his sleeve.
He turned, making his annoyance clear with a roll of his eyes. “Yes, Miss Beauchamp. What is it now?”
Frederica knew the first mate lacked an appreciation for passengers, particularly those with a curious nature like her own. Tilting her chin haughtily, she proclaimed, “Pardon me, sir, but there is a ship approaching,” and she pointed to the dot on the horizon.
He squinted his eyes in the direction she indicated, then frowned. “Miss Beauchamp, if this is some sort of joke…”
“Whatever do you mean—a joke? Do you not see the white of the sails yon?”
“I do not.” Patronizingly, he asked the midshipman, “How about you, Davy, do you see it?”
Davy raised a hand over his eyes. “Nah, but then I can’t see a far ways.”
The first mate waved her off. “Run along, girl. Find something to occupy yourself with, and leave the men to their work.”
Inside, Frederica steamed at his dismissal of her, but she took a deep breath and tried again. “Sir, I am not playing. I see a ship on the horizon. Please alert the lookout!”
“I told you to quiet down,” the first mate snarled.
“Hmph! Fine, then I’ll alert the captain.”
“You will do no such thing! Now stop this ruckus, or I will have you detained.”
“Detain me? I am merely trying to save you from a possible ambush!” Her voice sounded high and shrill, even to her.
Just then, Cassandra tottered up on deck, her blonde hair whipping in the wind. “Frederica, I can hear you all the way down below. What is happening?”
“A ship is approaching and this fool will not order a lookout!”
Cassandra looked out to sea. “I don’t see anything…”
“But I do! Right there.” Frederica pointed again.
The first mate grabbed Frederica’s arm. “Enough!”
Adrenaline coursed through Frederica’s veins, and she spun around and slapped the officer across the cheek.
“That’s it, missy. I’ve had enough impertinence out of you.” The first mate snatched Frederica’s arms behind her and turned to Davy. “Clap her in irons.”
“Sir?” Davy asked, taken aback.
“You heard me!”
Davy ran to fetch restraints, and the first mate held Frederica tight.
“Let me go, you fool! There’s a ship and it’s gaining,” Frederica insisted.
About the author:
Cassandra Barnes
Writing is a creative outlet for me, and I find inspiration everywhere. Although words sometimes flow for me, I usually have to rewrite everything several times before it all comes together to my satisfaction. I alternate between handwritten pages and filling a blank PC screen. My perfectionist ways frequently lead to writer’s block! When that happens, all I can do is take a break. Once the pressure is off, the words I need eventually appear.
I was a Certified Public Accountant in my first career. As a volunteer, I've been a literacy tutor, mentored other writers, and raised money for animal welfare. Other than books, a few of my favorite things are animals, flowers, food, music, metaphysics, and science.
I grew up in a rural Washington town in the fifties. In the 70s, I lived a year in Teheran, and later visited Rome, Athens, Alexandria, and Beijing. Since then I’ve lived on the Oregon coast, in the Arizona deserts, and now make my home on a mountain top in California. I’ve been happy and sad, employed and unemployed, healthy and unwell, married and unmarried, creative and dull. Best of all, I have loved and been loved by good guys and bad boys, and that’s what keeps my world turning.
Inquisitor by R J Blain
When Allison is asked to play Cinderella-turned-Fiancee at a Halloween ball, the last thing she expects is to be accused of murder. She has to find the killer and quick, or she'll be put to death for the crimes she didn't commit. To make matters worse, the victims are all werewolves.
On the short list of potential victims, Allison has to act fast, or the killer will have one more body to add to his little black book of corpses.
There's only one problem: One of the deaths has struck too close to home, and Allison's desire for self-preservation may very well transform into a quest for vengeance...
EXCERPT
It was well enough our ‘relationship’ was nothing more than make-believe. Our friendship wasn’t much better off, either. Unfortunately, Mark didn’t know that. I shook my head to clear it, staring down at my watch.
3:59 pm.
I glanced eastward, at the glass-lined wall of the jewelry store I was in. Shoppers hurried about their business in the broad mall hallways, chatting to each other or talking on their too-expensive cell phones. Beyond the walls of the building, I could already feel the moon calling to me, birthing shivers under my skin. In a little over an hour, it would start to rise. I made a thoughtful sound, turning my attention back to the glass case in front of me.
It was a full moon on Halloween. Some people would don masks, confident in their superiority as a human, never realizing how close they’d tread to a very violent and bloody end. Others would remove the masks they normally hid behind, rejoicing in their one night of freedom.
A sad few would have no idea what horrors they had sowed come morning.
I was in a lot of trouble. My fellow boogeymen didn’t frighten me all that much. It was Mark who worried me. Mark, as well as the other humans he’d subject me to before the night was done. I hadn’t lost control in years — I doubted Mark’s mother had been born since the last time it’d happened.
But that didn’t change the fact that it could happen.
Old or not, I was still a bitch. Without pack or mate, it was only a matter of time before I lost control.
Mark wouldn’t stand a chance, and when I finally lost my grip on sanity, I wouldn’t even remember killing him. Why hadn’t I said no? Why had I agreed to travel to New York on Halloween? What had I been thinking?
I hadn’t been, and that was a big problem.
“Is there something I can help you with, miss?” A woman asked from beside me. I about jumped out of my skin.
Shit. I swallowed back my heart and improvised. Without really seeing the jewelry beneath the glass, I pointed at something shiny, and hoped it was a necklace. “May I see that please?”
“That’s a very expensive piece, ma’am.”
I glanced at the woman out of the corner of my eye. A pastel pink blazer was matched with a pencil skirt that showed off thin legs and knee-high black boots. Glittering bracelets clung to her wrists. “Is that so,” I murmured, focusing my attention on the piece I pointed at.
Rubies and diamonds winked at me, woven together in a Celtic knot trapped in the center of a web of delicate diamond-encrusted chains. My cheek twitched.
No wonder the woman was skeptical and eying me suspiciously. Here I was, in some luxury jewelry store poking around to waste time, dressed in a beat-up leather coat, a baggy sweater, and worn jeans, complete with mud splatter from my walk in Central park. As my luck had it, I pointed out a necklace worth more than any car or house I’d ever seen in person, let alone owned.
I felt the eyes of every customer in the store settle on me. Great. Just what I needed. An audience.
Maybe I should’ve acted more indignant. Maybe I should’ve walked away. Instead, I took out my wallet, pulled out my black platinum Amex card, and tossed it on the counter. “May I see that please?”
The sales woman stared at the card and then at me, her eyes narrowing. “Do you really think I’m going to believe this is your card?”
Half of the customers in the store cleared out in the time it took the sales woman to pick up my card.
“Is there a problem?” A man dressed in a business suit stepped forward. His blue eyes took in my clothes before settling on the black credit card in his coworker’s hand.
The woman glared down her nose at me, her gaze settling on my beat-up jacket. “I do believe we have a stolen credit card here, sir.”
The manager snatched my credit card. “Is this true, miss?”
Oh hell no. I felt my cheek twitch again. “It’s not. I’ll just take my card to a different store, then.”
“I think this can be resolved quickly and easily, miss,” the man replied. He frowned at me. “Can I see your ID please?”
I showed him my license. The manager winced. “I’m sorry, there have been a lot of theft of valuable jewelry lately by those with fraudulent credit cards and out of state driver’s licenses. This will only take a few minutes as I verify this is a real card.”
Well, at least he wasn’t going to call the police on me right away. I sighed. “Since when hasn’t my driver’s license been sufficient proof? What is this? LA?”
I grew up in Milford, NH and enjoyed writing ever since my high school English teacher gave us time to write in our daily journal. I wrote stories based on the game I was playing at the time, “Bard’s Tale” and used to narrate in my mind what was happening as I went to my next class.
I find inspiration in all kinds of places. Once I get an idea, it is off and running. I live in NH with my wife and two cats.
