Wail of the Banshees by Robert Poulin

The Ghost Wars Saga Bestiary

Ghost: Ghost is a generic term used to describe the spirit of a dead person. There are many types of ghosts, they are typically categorized by their species and power type. There are two human form species; shades and darklings.

Shade: A shade is a species of ghost that is shrouded in a misty cloak that completely obscures its features. Shades have low status in Limbo, most of them are slaves. There are all kinds of shades, but whatever their type, they all remain weaker than the equivalent type of darkling.

Darkling. A darkling is a species of ghost whose features are the same as they were in life except for a black nimbus that outlines their bodies. Typically darklings start out as shades but over time evolve. darklings have a higher status than shades and are more powerful than them.

Anisi: Anisi are the weakest type of ghost in Limbo. They are unable to manifest or interact with the living world in any way. All shade anisi are slaves while darkling anisi hold the lowest jobs in the ghost society.

Phantom: Phantoms are ghosts who have the ability to not only manifest in the living world but also can project sound in it. Phantoms are used to frighten humans and are most often responsible for hauntings.

Poltergeist: The poltergeist has similar abilities as the phantom but with the added ability to manipulate objects in the living world. A Poltergeist can also manipulate energy in the form of electricity.

Banshee: A banshee is a female ghost who was tortured to death. These ghosts are rare and highly feared as their final moments in life made them insane. A banshees sonic scream can destroy most things in Limbo and the living world. A single scream from a banshee can obliterate scores of ghosts, sending them to their final death. Even the mighty reapers fear the power of the banshee, only wraiths appear to be immune to the scram. Banshees also have similar power as the phantom and the poltergeist.

Specter: Specters are the thugs of Limbo. They are big, brutish ghosts with big claws and teeth. Specters are unable to manifest in the living world and their origins are shrouded in mystery. (read Wail of the Banshees to learn the secret of their origins).

Reaper: A reaper is a being that was utterly evil in life and has entered the afterlife as a ghost of terrible power. Reapers are the captains of Limbo's armies. They are supernaturally strong and fast, and have all the powers of the phantom and the poltergeist. They are tall, skeletal ghosts who are extremely hard to send to the final death. Some reapers can wield magic as well.

Wraith: Wraiths are the masters of Limbo. They are the most powerful entities in the realm of the dead. Each wraith has its own unique abilities and magic. Wraiths are utterly evil. It is believed that people like Hitler and Stalin become wraiths, but no one knows for sure what their origins are.

Luminary: A luminary is an angel-like ghost that can wield the power of celestial energy. They are thought to be equals to the reapers and some may be able to rival a wraith. The origins of the luminaries remains a mystery.

Siren: A siren is a ghost with the power to manipulate emotions through their voice. Sirens use song to elicit a desired emotion from a being or group of beings. The most powerful sirens can force creatures to do their bidding as long as they maintain their song.

Furies: Furies are the ghosts of dead animals. The most common fury encountered by human ghosts are canine and feline types that roam the wilderness of Limbo in large packs.

Gargoyle: A gargoyle is a statue that has been animated by tethering (chaining) a fury into it. Gargoyles exist simultaneously in Limbo and the living world and can interact with both at the same time. Gargoyles are supernaturally strong and tough. They always do the bidding of their master.

Golem: A golem is a statue that has been possessed by a demon. The demon retains all of its abilities and uses the statue as armor and for the added ability to interact with both Limbo and the living world simultaneously.

Vampires: Vampires are humans who have willingly allowed a blood demon to possess them. The human spirit is devoured by the blood demon at the moment of possession. Vampires do not fear the sun, garlic, running water, or holy objects. They can be killed by bullets, fire, and trucks; it just takes a lot more effort and luck to put them down, celestial steel works best. The blood demon that inhabits the host human hungers for human blood and weakens without it. Once joined, the blood demon cannot survive without the human shell. Vampires are supernaturally strong, fast, and tough. There are different varieties of blood demons which accounts for the additional varied powers of individual vampires.

Shifters: Shifters are humans who invite a fury to cohabitate in their bodies. During the Ritual of Calling, a fury willingly answers the summons and tethers itself to the human without damaging the hosts own spirit. The ritual caller cannot control what type of fury will answer the call, you get whatever comes. The human gains the ability to assume the furies animal form as well as a human-animal hybrid form. Shifters are supernaturally strong, quick, tough, and have amazing regenerative powers.

Fae:  The fae were once known as the Nephilim, the offspring of "the sons of God" and "the daughters of man". The fae come in hundreds of varieties and they all wield different powers, though glamour is common to most of them. In ancient times, many of them were worshipped as gods and they figure prominently in human mythology.

Ghouls: A ghoul is a human body that has had its soul destroyed when a darkling was forced into it. The human body begins to decay and the darkling has gone mad during its forced tethering. Ghouls suffer great agony and only the eating of human flesh provides relief. They are supernaturally strong and tough but make poor soldiers due to their madness.

Zombies: zombies are corpses that have been animated by a necromancer. Necromancers animate corpses by forcing a ghost into the dead body and chaining it there. The necromancer cannot target a specific ghost, the ritual pulls the nearest one. The ghosts personality and memories are destroyed by the animation process. The most powerful of necromancers can raise hundreds of bodies in one ritual, thereby destroying hundreds of ghosts in one fell swoop. Zombies are dumb, hungry things used primarily to frighten enemies or to use as slaves.

Wizards: Wizards are the protectors of humanity. They wield magic and are aware of the threats against humanity. In modern times their numbers have dwindled and they've become isolationists as they've been hunted down to near extinction. Most American wizards have refused to give into the siege mentality of their brethren and remain on the job.

Short description

A murdered college student must help the Philadelphia Police Department track down the serial killer responsible for her death and then lead an improbable rebellion against the powers that be in the ghost realm of Limbo.

My name is Veronika Kane and dying, dying was just the beginning.

How was I supposed to know that getting smashed on my 21st birthday would lead me to becoming the 9th victim of a serial killer that’s been stalking Philadelphia’s streets for months? Now I’m a ghost and unlife is pretty scary. Reapers, wraiths, ghouls, gargoyles: all of the monsters that I thought were storybook characters are real! On top of it all, the powers that be in the ghost world want to enslave me and use me in their own diabolical plot to manipulate the people of the living world. Too bad I didn’t turn out to be the kind of ghost they wanted me to be, and I’m not about to let them turn me into one of their puppets. These ghosts are responsible for my murder and the murders of eight other women.

A rebellion is coming, and the ghosts that run this place are about to find out just how big a mistake they made when they had me killed.

My name is Veronika Kane and being murdered isn't the end of my story.

Wail of the Banshees is an Urban Fantasy Novel and the first book in the exciting Ghost Wars saga which features paranormal horror and action set in living Philadelphia and the ghostly world of Limbo.
