Winter's Magic

Winter’s Magic
By Cynthia Gail

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Beth Sergeant and Nick Chester come from opposite ends of the social food chain. While he sees a rare beautiful woman without an agenda, she sees a wealthy playboy. Can he convince her to let go of her insecurities and take a chance on love, when challenges from his past force her to reveal her most guarded secret?
Owner of La Bella Vita, a five-star day spa nestled in the affluent suburbs of Nashville, Tennessee, Beth Sergeant knows her elite clientele first hand. She attended their private schools. She was even engaged, although briefly, to one of their most recognized bachelors. But she never fit in to their social-elite world.
After losing his parents to a car accident at a young age, Nick Chester was raised by his grandfather, the wealthiest man in Nashville. When he chooses to socialize, he has a never-ending list of exclusive events and beautiful women vying for his attention. Yet he never lets himself forget that everyone has an agenda.
Beth can’t resist Nick’s charm and accepts an invitation to dinner, despite her deep-seated insecurities. She proves she’s nothing like other women Nick's dated and learns to trust him in return. But just as the last of their resistance crumbles and true love is within reach, challenges from Nick's past threaten to destroy everything and force Beth to reveal her most guarded secret.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

“Can I see you Wednesday night?”

“Assuming you get out in the morning?” Beth tried to feign indifference as the grin on her face reached new heights. He wanted to see her again. That fact, and being with him tonight, was nothing short of an early Christmas present. Score one for Jenny’s advice. Sometimes you do have to let down your guard and enjoy life as it comes.

“True. I’m not worried, though. Surely they’ll have this cleaned up overnight.”

“When do you get home?”

“I think I land around six.”

“Give me a call when you get in and we’ll figure out where to meet.”

Beth closed her eyes for a moment to absorb the exquisite sensation of being cocooned in his arms as he held her so gently. She could feel the power in his broad shoulders and the hardness of his chest as he drew her against him a little closer than before, bringing every nerve ending in her body to attention.

When she opened her eyes, Nick was staring at her with an intensity that caused a shudder to run through her. And as the music faded, he led her through one last turn and bent down to kiss her. Short, but heavenly sweet. Then he nodded toward the windows.

“We probably need to head home.”

“I don’t think the snow’s going to let up anytime soon.” Her voice sounding steadier than she felt.

Home is where you hang your hat. A native Missourian, my family relocated twice during my teenage years, taking me from a high school freshman class of over 1,200 students to living in a small town in Kentucky with a total population of less than 1,000.

Home is where your heart is. Despite the culture shock and challenges of those shy, teenage years, I met my true love in that tiny town and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to experience a community where everyone waves, calls you by name, and treats you like family.

My husband and I live in the suburbs of Nashville, Tennessee with our eighteen-year-old son and three dogs. When I’m not working or writing, I can be found with family and friends. I love to bake in the winter, grill in the summer, and on occasion, I sneak away from everyone and curl up with a good book.

I hope you enjoy my stories. Each one touches on modern day issues, fears, and challenges that women face every day. And each one illustrates that love is within reach if you let down those walls and allow your heart to open. Our lives and experiences are so much more meaningful when we have someone to share them with.

Review:

5/5

It takes a great book to grab my attention and keep it, but Christie managed it without any problem.  I started reading when I didn't actually have time to finish the entire book, but I ended up doing that regardless of what else I was supposed to be doing.

Each character, even those with a small supporting role, were vividly created to the point where you could see them and when they felt, so did you.

If you want to hold your breath during the intense action moments, frown when things don't work out perfect, and cheer when the good guys win a round, then Shadow Play is the book you want to read.

A great start to a series, I can't wait for the next book!

Author Bio
I have resided in and have visited many places in the world, all of which have
contributed in some way to my own published writing. I have literally traveled
throughout the world, on numerous occasions. I have lived in Finland, Germany,
Thailand, Saudi Arabia (where COVERT DREAMS is set), and the U.S. Virgin
Islands (where DEADLY EYES is set). I gained the wanderlust to see the world,
to experience other cultures, at an early age, and this desire has never left
me. If anything, it has only gained in intensity as I have aged. I try to travel
internationally at least once a year. In the interim, I spend lots of time traveling
around both my home state of California and other nearby states.

I spent my early years in the small town of Lone Pine, California, the home of
almost every western movie, in addition to a wide variety of other genres, made
in the 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's. In fact, Hollywood still films parts of big-time
movies there today. My dad, the town's lifeguard at the time, personally knew
John Wayne, Lloyd Bridges, and Lee Marvin, all of whom came to the town's
pool, the Memorial Plunge, at times to cool off after a hectic day of working
in the sun. I was even an extra in a movie filmed there in 1957, MONOLITH
MONSTERS, a B-cult favorite even today. I was ten years old at the time. Even
though I resided in a small town hours from the big city, I was exposed to the
excitement of action and heroes at a formative age, and, thus, my interest in
writing novels of suspense such as COVERT DREAMS and DEADLY EYES was
born.

As a recent retiree from a forty-year career as a professor of writing, I now live in
Southern California wine country with my wife, Kitty, and our two other cats.

Marie Astor and Over the Mountain and Back

They were moving much faster now, with Naum leading the way as before, and Peter following behind him, slashing through thorny shrubbery with the sharp blade of his hatchet. Soon the path cleared up and became wider; from a distance they could spot a small wooden house that stood on top of a hill. Concealed by the surrounding bushes, they were able to creep to the bottom of the hill from where they could see inside the window, and they hid deep down in the thick undergrowth.
“Now what?” Peter whispered.
“Now we wait. She’s got to leave her house sooner or later,” whispered Naum.
“And if she doesn’t?” whispered Lara.
“Then we’ll draw her out, but first let’s give her a chance to do it on her own.”
Through the window, they could make out a dimly lit small kitchen with pots and pans of various sizes haphazardly dangling from the walls. Lara and Peter immediately recognized the imposters that they had met at the inn in the fidgety woman with matted hair and the twig-like man who sat across the table. She was still wearing the same green dress, but he had changed his attire into loose-fitting, marsh-colored robes. The two were drinking tea from ornate china. As the children watched Ramona drop a cube of sugar into her and Leshii’s cups, they were enthralled to see the teaspoons begin stirring the sugar, jingling lightly against the delicate edges of the saucers, without either Ramona or Leshii laying a finger on them. What they saw next left them gaping with awe. In the middle of the table stood a large wooden bowl filled with a rich assortment of cookies that Ramona and Leshii consumed in the most unusual way. As soon as they would open their mouths, the cookies would slowly lift off the plate to glide directly into their smacking lips. Ramona held her saucer delicately in her hand, taking dainty little sips, while Leshii loudly gulped his tea and greedily chomped on cookies that flew into his mouth one after another. What made the cookies jump out of the bowl was not a spell, but the bowl itself, which made any food eaten from it pop right into your mouth. Ramona had inherited the bowl from her grandmother and enjoyed showing it off to Leshii from time to time, and he always admired it with childlike delight. Of course, the bowl was intended for bite-sized foods and was not meant for things like porridge or stew, which Ramona had experimented with once, when she was a child witch. It turned out be a complete mess.
Then the children noticed Ramona wave her hand lightly, sending one of the biscuits all the way to the edge of the kitchen, where it landed on the floor. There was a sound of a rattling chain, and to their outrage and dismay, they saw Ethan emerge feebly to pick up the cookie from the floor. His feet were bound by hefty shackles adjoining to a heavy metal chain that clanked and clinked with his every move. In the few days since he had been kidnapped, Ethan had undergone an unfathomable transformation. His face had lost its indolent, capricious expression, and his overall demeanor had been reduced to timid obedience. Ethan devoured the cookie almost instantly and silently retreated back to his spot in the far corner of the kitchen, where a pile of hay had been tossed on the floor in lieu of a bed.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Dear Reader,

Thank you very much for joining me for Over the Mountain and Back blog tour. The story of Over the Mountain and Back began over twenty years ago when I was fourteen years old and decided to write a novel as an anniversary gift for my parents. It was going to be a fantasy adventure about a boy named Peter and a girl named Lara set in a magical country, Transadonia. I remember writing studiously on the pages of an ornate notebook I had acquired especially for the occasion. Back then computers were not yet widely used, so I had to pay extra care to my handwriting. A year later, Over the Mountain and Back was completed, or at least I had thought so at the time. Needless to say my parents were very surprised with their anniversary gift.

Years passed; I finished high school and went on to college. Lara’s and Peter’s story faded from my mind, replaced by the hustles and bustles of everyday life. Then, one day – the day that happened to be my thirtieth birthday, my parents presented me with a gift: it was oblong in shape and wrapped in shiny paper. After I opened the wrapping, I was stunned to find the long forgotten story I had written all those years ago.

Long story short, after two years of extensive work, I rewrote and expanded Over the Mountain and Back into a novel of 95,000 words. For me it had been an exciting journey to be reunited with my old friends: Lara and Peter, Forest Witch Ramona, Chancellor Libra, Bookbrownies, and, of course, Carnelion, among the many others.

I hope that you will join Lara and Peter on their adventure in Transadonia.

Publisher Showcase - Class Act Books

Today’s publisher showcase is all about …
Class Act Books is a relatively new publisher, but from the books they’ve brought to us so far, they have a little something for everyone.

Tritomitian station owner Sarkin Trant has always known his great-grandfather was the illegitimate son of an Arcanian giarl, but he’s stunned when he learns a bizarre turn of events has made him the new Giarl of Craigsmere. With severe misgivings about leaving his home, Sar take son Hatch and Terran Katy and goes to claim his inheritance.

As Sar emerges into Arcanian society, his outspokenness, naivity, and provincial manners slowly but surely charm everyone around him, from the Craigsmere cook to the Margrave himself. He enthusiastically throws himself into taking over the late Lord Craigsmere’s duties, especially those of passing certain bills giving the lowest members of society more rights, while son Hatch finds himself fitting in with the younger nobility and discovering an intriguing love interest.

Though Sar’s political endeavors are succeeding, things aren’t going so well on the home-front as he spend more time away from Katy and more and more time at the government meeting house and attending dinners and social gatherings to gain support to get his laws passed. One of the people he meets in his outings is Meva du Thane, a predatory female intending to snare a noble husband. Only a giarl will do, and she sets her sights on Sar…but the scheme she concocts may prove be a disaster for everyone involved…

“There is much to enjoy in this book, if you like historical romance its there, if you like psy-fi/fantasy it's there, if you enjoy a good giggle and maybe even a belly laugh or two it's there, if you enjoy drama it's there. Oh, what the heck, if you just like a good book, here you go, Ms. Blackstone delivers.”

Trixie Trident has a secret. Everyone knows she creates one of a kind jewelry during the day. It's what she does on her night job no one would ever guess. She's a tooth fairy. Not the tooth fairy, just one of many. It would take her whole life just to combat the many misconceptions people have about TF's. Like how nobody wears tutus or uses a wand. Or stands three inches high. Nope, Trixie looks just like any other woman in her mid twenties. And she'd tell people all of that stuff. If she was allowed to. But she'd sworn a sacred tooth fairy oath that she'd never tell a soul. And she hadn't. Except for her best friend, who would never breathe a word to anyone. Graham Keebler meets Trixie when she comes in his dental office as a new patient. He's had lots of single women patients before, but no one has ever sparked his interest like Trixie. What is it about her that's so unique? He can't quite figure it out, but he's determined to try, even when she turns him down for a second date. Trixie is attracted to Graham, like she's never been to any man before. Her insides purr just thinking about him. He's what she's always dreamed of in a man. And they even have the subject of teeth in common! But a relationship with the gorgeous dentist can never be. How could it? When she's a tooth fairy, and not only can't she tell him, he'd never believe her anyway.

“This is such a great story! I was either laughing or at least smiling the whole time I read it.”

Jacinda keeps to her safe space doing investigative research, avoiding people and places with people. Her own conscience and morals force her to seek justice for women whose lives were ended. Tossed into the world of police work and murderers, she tries to help from a distance while protecting her own secrets and sanity. If she uses her unwanted ability to find the killer, will she have to give up everything again and run one more time?
Jacinda clashes with the very strong, grounded detective, fate has thrown her to. At some point he begins to matter. Will he see her as a freak and look at her with abhorrence when she's through? She doesn't investigate people, can't get that close. But when someone she did know was murdered how can she not get involved. If you could see everything just by simply touching someone or something, wouldn't that be amazing? Or would it take everything away from you over and over again?
"Because I have this ability to look at something and not see the same thing everyone else does." Jacinda Brown wasn't lying when she said that. Of course, she also wasn't going to explain that with just a touch, she could see everyone that had touched an object. Through her hand she could feel your emotions, your thoughts. A gift or a curse? She had worked too hard this time in having a home, having a life to give it all up again. She was done suffering through the side affects that often left her ill and weak. She had a normal life now, blending in completely undetected in her lonely existence.
Would you be willing to give up everything, again, to stop a killer?

When a fifth murder happens, Jacinda Brown makes the decision to use her gift to find the killer. She doesn't let herself think of how she's going to suffer afterward, the consequences that will curse her again, just thinks of stopping a killer. Is the price she'll willing pay for the ability she doesn't want.

We are of another plain. Our lives, seemingly never-ending. As strangers to your realm, we guard our knowledge firmly. Only by ancient covenant do few know our true natures. “A delightful story you'll long remember.”

Jack Franks sat at his desk. His name plaque indicated he was the Chief of Police and his uniform denoted his position, but his daily routine seemed about as exciting as watching the grass grow on a hot summer afternoon.
He thought of all the episodes of Law And Order he’d watched over the years. Now those cops were doing real police work. They certainly weren’t filling in for the crossing guard or helping Maude Paul get her cat down out of the tree growing next to her porch.
It wasn’t like he wanted to have an unsolved murder on his hands, but he did want to do more than act like Barney Fife on the old Andy Griffith Show. His officers were good at catching speeders in the speed trap out on the highway, but they did little else to earn their salaries.
Jack heard the phone ring but ignored it. The office employed a secretary and that at least gave her something to do with her time every day. It’s probably another cat stuck in a tree. It’s nothing to get too excited about.
He went back to reading the weekly paper that came out yesterday and just made it to his desk this morning. The news was no different than it had been last week. Clara Johnson had her in-laws over for Sunday dinner so they could see the new baby and the Bradley twins celebrated their sixteenth birthday. Pete Brown’s daughter got married and Harley Sacks’ dog bit the mailman.
Rather than read anything further, he threw the paper down on the desk and was set to go out for a walk when the phone on his desk rang.
“I think you ought to take this one, chief,” the secretary said through the intercom.
Jack sighed deeply and picked up the receiver. “Franks here,” he answered.
“Jack, this is Al. I just went out to Storrs Lake fishing and there’s a man floating in the middle of the lake.”

It isn’t easy being a Wizard’s Wife!

The Harmonic Convergence fast approaches and with it danger to the Earth and its people…

And not just any faery but the Champion of White Fire, a Royal Prince, charged with protecting the Earth from invasion by Siobhan’s brother, dark wizard Exeter Dubhtina. Immediately, Megan learns nothing in the McMuir household is what it seems…starting with Ossian, David’s supercilious familiar, a drop-dead gorgeous fae with the sexist wings this side of the Emerald Isle, the fact that the house itself is really an enchanted magnolia tree, and a pair of faery in-laws who can’t accept their son has married a mortal. As if that isn’t bad enough, Megan learns she’s pregnant, and the baby will be a Halfling, a child with a dual supernatural-mortal heritage.

When the Convergence begins and David is recalled to Ais Linn, Megan braves the Portal’s dangers to follow him. Soon, she finds herself the Dark Lord’s prisoner, a pawn in the fight against her husband. The threat from Exeter Dubhtina is a deadly one: Surrender to me or your wife and unborn child will die!

“This story is a must read for every person that loves a Fairytale.”

Between Heaven and Hell lies The Median. It exists as a place to direct souls to their next destination. When a person dies their life is measured for all its flaws and triumphs. People don't know about this though, they couldn't or they would alter their behavior. As far as the world is concerned The Median does not exist. The workers of The Median are people who work as drones to watch over the people of the world and document their behavior. They don't eat, sleep, have wants, desires or feelings. They blend in with every crowd, and are never noticed by ordinary people. Simon is the exception to that. One day he goes to a coffee house he's been to a thousand times and discovers the cashier remembers him when she shouldn't. Instead of reporting it he befriends the girl. Simon tries to convince himself that he can still do his job, and have a friend. But as his work begins to suffer, Simon begins to realize that maybe this is more than just a friendship.

A hundred years before, the villagers of Balleywalegh drove the vampire preying on their womenfolk from their midst…and that should’ve been the end of it. But now, it’s 1929, and the monster’s back. Or is he? Someone’s definitely occupying the abandoned manor house again. Karel Novotny has the same name as the former Undead resident but he’s much, much younger, and more up-to-date. He even drives a Stutz Bearcat! With his movie idol good-looks, he’s enthralled the local lasses, especially Seamus Flannery’s daughter Brigid. Seamus isn’t much for believing in vampires or any other creature of the night but he’s a little worried about the pale young man’s attention to his daughter. And when Brigid becomes suddenly and unexplainably ill, he has to make a decision.
Is Karel Novotny the monster returned or not, and if so, what will the good men of Balleywalegh do this time?

Lexie Cortese is in Rome to forget. The last thing she expects is to meet a sexy Interpol agent who suspects her of being part of a terrorist plot involving a stolen diamond. Suddenly thrust into a world of murders, muggings, and kidnappings, Lexie doesn't know what to think--or who to believe.

Dominic Brioni's assignment is simple. Befriend the American and bring her to justice. Only Lexie seems the most unlikely terrorist Dominic has ever met. Sweet, determined, and direct, she faces life with courage and fire, a fire that sparks his protective instincts and a longing for something more--something he allowed himself to hope for only.

Excerpt:

Lexie had started to run to him when someone grabbed her arm, pulling her around. A man, his face hidden by a ski mask, held tightly to her. Her shock ratcheted to fear. “Let go,” she yelled, trying to jerk her arm away from him, but his grip tightened. The dim light from the balcony above illuminated his flat black eyes. She had seen those eyes before. Holy shit. She was in trouble. The masked man grabbed for her purse. She screamed, and with strength she didn’t know she possessed, whammed him on the head with her purse. He staggered back, swearing, and slipped and fell. Lights and freedom beckoned from the nearby Via Corsi, but all Lexie could think about was Dominic. Turning on her heels, she ran to him, slipping on the ancient stones herself as Dominic struggled to stand. But before she could reach him, the mugger caught up with her and grabbed her shoulder, twisting her around. Dominic sprang up and flew at the mugger, knocking him to the ground. The two men grappled, rolling together on the cobbled street. Lexie, her heart thumping wildly, looked for an opening to bean the mugger again, to give Dominic a better chance at overcoming him.

“Stop it! Stop it! Leave him alone!” The mugger ended up on top, and she whaled away with her bag, getting in any shot she could.

Shouts and the slap of running feet vibrated through the alley. The mugger swore, jumped up, and raced away, a few men giving chase. Several others helped Dominic to stand, yelling in excited voices, and gesturing toward where their attacker had disappeared.

Dominic winced in pain. Lexie looked down at his ripped, blood-soaked pant leg. “Dominic, you’ve got to get to the hospital. You’re bleeding.”

“I’m okay,” he said. “It is nothing.” Brushing dirt off his jacket, he turned to the men and said something in rapid Italian. With nods, they strode away.

Breathing heavily, Lexie disagreed. “You’re not okay. We’ll get a cab and take you to the hospital.”

He cupped her shoulders. “I’ve been through worse. I’m fine. Are you okay? Did he hurt you?”

“No. I’m…” The full impact of what had happened hit her. The adrenaline that had given her strength suddenly dissipated and she began to tremble. “I’m not okay.”

“Lexie.” Dominic moved forward to take her into his arms. She held on for dear life, needing his strength. He rubbed his hand along her back. “It’s okay, Lexie. We’re both okay. You’re safe with me.”

She clung to him. It wasn’t her imagination. Strange things were happening. She had nothing anyone could want. She didn’t know who to trust. Dominic said she was safe with him. But was she really?
